Challenges, objectives and expected results

.

Challenge - Feasibility and scalability of aquathermal energy

Aquathermal energy (AQE) technologies enable the extraction of heat or cold from water – surface water from rivers, canals, lakes, etc – and subsequent processing, through heat pumps, to support local or district heat networks. Although AQE technology exists, there are several barriers to its widespread adoption: unclarity and absence of enabling legislation and regulation in many NWE regions; challenges in establishing the potential and amount of energy which may be generated from different water sources; and the lack of replicable, scalable implementation models.

Objectives - Learning network for energy communities

Achievement of EU 2030 and 2050 energy policy objectives of reducing dependence on fossil fuels, accelerating a citizen-led just transition, and increasing EU energy resilience will require widespread adaption and adoption of multiple energy sources; AquaCom seeks to prove that AQE can be adopted on a widespread, sustainable basis, to fulfil this need.

Expected results

AquaCOM contributes to achieving the EU-policy objectives by inspiring, empowering and enabling Energy Communities across 5 NWE regions to exploit the potential of AQE to implement community-led AQE projects. To share knowledge and expertise, an AQE Community of Practice is formed across targeted transnational stakeholder groups through a combination of ambitious actions designed to share and transfer technical and governance experience and expertise. This transnational approach combines the strengths and weaknesses of partner countries: frontrunner AQE countries such as NL; IE and FR where AQE still occupies a niche space; and the expertise of BE, DE and IE in building EC capacity.
