EXTRAQT investigated the aquathermal potential of the Vaart as a heat and cold source for the Marie Thumas building in Leuven. First, we model the thermal properties of the canal including interactions between the water and the environment (sun, wind, etc.). Next, our models apply the heat and cold demand of the building to the body of water and dynamically calculate the aquathermal potential over a period of several years. This analysis determines the available energy down to an hourly level and identifies critical moments.
